On Friday 9 and Saturday 10 March 2012 we are running a hands-on programme of training activities in working with children using sandtray, movement, music and sensory awareness. You will also be clearer on whether you have what it takes to work with children and families.

PICT CHILDHOOD ABUSE TRAINING CONTENT

This eighteen day course offers unique tools and skills to enable practising therapists or counsellors to work quickly, competently, thoroughly, confidently and compassionately - without taking clients through details of traumatic experiences. The PICT Childhood Abuse Training manual includes handouts for clients and has every exercise scripted for ease of use.

The PICT Childhood Abuse Training is accredited through the National Council of Psychotherapists (NCP). The nine module course will contain 117 CPD hours. The additional optional PICT QC module is 13 hours.

A PICT Certification document will be given upon successful completion of the nine module course with the title PICT Practitioner. A PICT QC Certification document is given upon successful completion of the PICT QC module, plus QC will be added to their title. Successful students will also qualify to apply for membership to the National Council of Psychotherapists (NCP). NCP membership is normally secured after an exhaustive process. However, because of the high standard of PICT training, successful students (upon application) will qualify to apply for licentiate membership of the NCP and, if successful, be entitled to use the NCP logo on any literature.

CHRISTIAN HERITAGE SUMMER SCHOOL

A Biblical Approach to Counselling

JULY 2012 - a 5 day course with Richard Winter, studying the relationship between theology, psychology and counselling to be held in Cambridge.

By studying the relationship between theology, psychology and counselling, 'A Biblical Approach to Counselling' will build a framework for Christian counselling. Designed for anyone who would like to develop understanding, discernment and practical application in caring and counselling, the course will explore issues of grief and depression, anger and forgiveness, anxiety and fear, perfectionism, homosexuality, shame and addictions. Theory and practice will be held hand in hand throughout, developing skills in listening, reflecting, paraphrasing, asking good questions and facilitating change.

Richard Winter is Professor of Practical Theology at Covenant Theological Seminary in St Louis, Missouri. Professor Winter teaches pastoral counselling to Master of Divinity students and prepares students to become Licensed Professional Counsellors. He is the author of ‘The Roots of Sorrow’ (Crossway, 1988), ‘Still Bored in a Culture of Entertainment’ (IVP, 2002) and ‘Perfecting Ourselves to Death’ (IVP, 2005).

Before moving to America, Richard Winter served as director of the English L’Abri Fellowship for 14 years. His successor at the L’Abri Fellowship, Andrew Fellows, describes Richard as possessing ‘a wealth of experience in counselling, both as a practitioner and as a teacher; all undergirded by a passion for theology and worldview thinking.’ Fellows adds, ‘I cannot recommend this course too highly.’

HELPING TO HEAL: HOW CHURCHES CAN SUPPORT SURVIVORS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

A training day run by Carolyn Spring

29 September 2012 in Huntingdon, Cambs.

Sexual abuse, according to research, affects 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys. That equates to about 10 million people in the UK who are survivors of sexual abuse. A report by the Church of England said that 80% of churchgoing women will go to someone in church for help rather than a counsellor or other professional.

There has been a welcome increase in recent years in the availability of training around child protection issues in churches. But there is very little information and training available on how to respond well to adult survivors of child sexual abuse. This training day looks to plug that gap. On this ‘Helping to Heal’ training day we will look at some basic information, to lay a foundation, such as:

And then we’ll look in more detail at how churches can respond well. We will look at abuse, and we will look at healing – and we’ll see how we can move from one to the other in a way that restores dignity and freedom back to survivors.

People who might benefit from coming on the day would include:

The training day will be run at our base in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire on 29 September 2012.

You can book online and pay by Paypal or credit/debit card, or alternatively you can pay by cheque by filling in a booking form. Direct invoicing is also available – please ask. The cost is £40.00 per person, but there are group discounts available, and some concessions for people on a low wage.

PICT Trauma & Abuse Specialist Skills Training

How would using the Parks Inner Child Therapy (PICT) method enrich my practice? PICT creates lasting change rapidly and gently. It’s like travelling by car instead of horse and buggy. This is the process to use when you want to make a big difference in a short space of time. PICT is a visualisation based, evolving form of CBT. This structured, systematic approach encompasses imagery rescripting, cortical remapping and rapid belief restructuring to establish new neural pathways, gently producing profound, rapid and lasting change – full resolution.
Although PICT was originally created to specifically help people recover from the trauma and damage of sexual, physical and emotional childhood abuse, PICT is equally effective for a wide range of challenging emotional problems, such as: food/drug/alcohol issues, OCD, DID, self harm, ritual abuse, anxiety, depression, PTSD, phobias, allergies, grief and loss issues (including murder, suicide, abortion, miscarriage, loss of job or home) and adult traumas (witnessing or experiencing highly shocking events such as: fire, bombings, rape, attacks, car/train/airplane accidents, etc).
Who trains in PICT?
Numerous private practice counsellors, therapists and specialist field practitioners have added PICT skills to their therapeutic ‘tool kits’. The NHS, Social Services, Relate, MIND and many private counselling agencies have also secured PICT training for their workers. They have found the advantages of using this powerful and versatile ‘stand-alone’ therapy model are shorter waiting lists and a chance to reduce the ‘revolving door’ syndrome. PICT provides measurable results and addresses the effects of trauma (whether in conscious memory or not) rather than focusing on details of an event - allowing practitioners to offer a service that is gentle - enabling clients to retain their privacy, dignity and to work comfortably.
What is the format of PICT Training?
The 18 day course has a total of 117 CPD hours; comprised of 9 X 2 day modules held monthly. Training focus is on practical specialist skills and application, therefore, students are assessed on pairs work, personal/professional qualities and a short, knowledge quiz each module –extensive research or essays are not required. Reading manual notes before each module is the only outside work necessary. The extensive PICT Training manual has every technique scripted for ease of use with handouts for clients.
Who can apply?
Prospective students will be fully qualified counsellors, therapists or practitioners with one year minimum of practical experience since completing initial training. Copies of relevant qualifications, indemnity insurance and professional body membership must be submitted with the PICT application form.
Where can I train and how much does it cost?
PICT Trainers are located in Surrey, Suffolk,Essex and West Yorkshire, but can be engaged by groups from any area to bring the course to the group’s location (pricing in those cases will additionally reflect trainer’s accommodation and travel). Courses starting in March and April 2011 are based in Suffolk and Halifax.
Lindsay Schofield, a member of ACC will be leading the next Surrey-based training, starting in September 2011. Dates include:

17/18th Sep 2011
15/16th Oct 2011
19/20th Nov 2011
17/18th Dec 2011
14/15th Jan 2012
18/19th Feb 2012
17/18th Mar 2012
14/15th Apr 2012
19/20th May 2012
